Therapy.
The therapists at Market Street Psychotherapy believe that the present is inextricably linked to the past. While the circumstances of the current moment certainly influence how you feel and thus deserve attention, we believe that past experiences and relationships play an outsized role in how you respond to what is in front of you in the present. If the present is the “tip of the iceberg”, the past is the much larger part of the iceberg “below the surface”.
Focusing only the stressors and feelings in the present moment will not affect significant, lasting change. Understanding the reasons and contexts of why you engage in a particular behavior or feel a certain way is essential for real change and growth.
This approach will not only ease your current distress and shift your problematic behavior, it also affords you the opportunity for more. Our therapists prioritize going deeper than your current symptoms to facilitate increased self-understanding, a cohesive and consistent sense of self, more fulfilling relationships, more emotional capacity, and a greater sense of meaning in your life.
At Market Street Psychotherapy, our providers emphasize depth-oriented psychotherapies in order to achieve those results. We have training in other theoretical orientations (e.g., CBT, DBT, mindfulness), but primarily utilize psychodynamic theory - a research-based approach - because it facilitates the greatest and longest-lasting change.
Please be aware that the psychiatrists at Market Street Psychotherapy provide psychotherapy, with or without concurrent medication management.
Psychiatry.
Our approach to psychiatry and the treatment of mental health issues with medications takes inspiration from the same whole-person approach that motivates our psychotherapy. We believe that focusing solely on an individual’s symptoms without a significant understanding of who that person is, where they come from, what their life looks like, and what matters to them will often lead to ineffective treatment. The unique story and mind of each person means that effective treatment requires a genuine understanding and appreciation of the person seeking assistance, not just awareness of the symptoms for which he or she seeks help.
That philosophy guides our model of extended initial evaluations and defaulting to 50 minute appointments for medication management. Market Street Psychotherapy will only offer the industry-standard 20 minute medication management appointment if there is a well-established relationship between the psychiatrist and patient and both the life circumstances of treatment of the patient are smooth and stable.
Our psychiatrist is trained as a psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and psychoanalyst. This allows Market Street Psychotherapy to integrate the biologic, psychologic, and relational aspects of your mental health, increasing the likelihood of meeting your treatment goals.
Diagnosis and Consultation.
If you are interested in meeting with a psychiatrist for evaluation of your diagnosis and current treatment, but would prefer to not take part in ongoing treatment, you can attend a few appointments in a short period of time, Market Street Psychotherapy offers psychiatric consultation.
After meeting with a Market Street Psychotherapy psychiatrist a few times (usually 2-4 appointments), the provider will offer you their diagnostic impressions and treatment recommendations. Those recommendations will then be sent to your primary care provider. Our preference is to provide ongoing treatment, as it allows for more nimble and timely adjustments of medications so that you are not under-medicated, over-medicated, or left unattended should you need more intensive care.
Please be aware that Market Street Psychotherapy does not conduct legal evaluations for situations such as disability, immigration, parenting, or forensics.
